An Uninformed and Silly Girl Review of ‘Man of Steel’

Okay guys, I’m just going to be completely honest here. My intense knowledge of “Superman” in general pretty much begins and end’s with Dean Cain aka… the Superman of the nineties from the hit show “Lois and Clark”.I’m an 80’s baby and what teenage girl in the 90’s didn’t think Dean Cain was smokin’ as Superman?

Those Tat's are SO hot

Those Tat’s are SO hot

Granted, I did see the 2006 “Superman Returns” on dvd and all I pretty much remember is that Kate Bosworth was really skinny and Jame’s Marsden was way hotter than the dude that played Superman (Brandon Routh for inquiring minds, yeah I don’t remember him either). While I do consider myself a girly girl, I DID have 2 older brothers, and was very well acquainted with Star Wars, GI Joe, He-Man and Super Heroes (particularly Batman, I had a viewing of ‘Batman and Robin’ at my 13th birthday party- Hello, Chris O’Donnell as Robin!) Since I got married, my husband and I have enjoyed keeping up with the various super hero movies. Spider man, X-Men, the NEW Batman Movies, Iron Man, (all them other Marvel comic ones) Avengers was awesome and so on.

I first heard there was going to be another Superman last summer at Comic Con when walking past the WB booth in the exhibit hall and there was a HUGE line with tons of security and Henry Cavill was signing autographs. I thought “Hmmm… He’s pretty cute” and got in trouble for stopping to try to take a picture of him. Which I succeeded in, albeit that it’s blurry. I honestly didn’t think another thought about it until the trailer came out a few months ago. I thought. “Whoa, That looks really good”, It looked pretty interesting!

Henry Cavill at Comic Con 2012

Henry Cavill at Comic Con 2012

So here is my very uninformed review, short and sweet and I know I will sound silly to all you comic book nerds, which I honestly don’t know how many of you follow us. I’m assuming most of you are like me who have a boyfriend or husband that want’s to go see it so this is what I’m gonna tell you. HENRY CAVILL. Holy Wow on a Cracker.

Thankfully I watched enough ‘Lois and Clark’ to get the basic jest of the story and what was going on. Some of the beginning was kind of weird/freaky stuff. ( Growing babies in pods? Cal El (super man) was the first naturally conceived birth in like hundreds of years which is why he is so special) I really loved Russel Crowe in this, mainly because he was NOT singing. Kevin Costner was the most awesome human dad for little Clark Kent. There was one scene that my husband asked if he was going to take Clark to his ‘Field of Dreams’ though which made me giggle. They got THE cutest little boy/teenager to play him a young Clark. There is a flash back scene that was just to die for. Diane Lane is old. All I kept thinking when I saw her was her running up to Mark Whalberg in ‘The Perfect Storm’ and jumping him in booty shorts and how hot my husband thought she was…. uhhh like 13 years ago. Yup just dated myself. Amy Adam’s as Lois Lane was absolutely perfect. How can you not LOVE Amy Adam’s. She is by far one of my favorite actresses. Plenty of sexual tension, I wanted to scream “Just KISS already!” The Villain “General Zod” played by Michael Shannon was really great. Spoiler Alert: there is no “kryptonite” but the way they made him have a weakness worked.

Field of Dreams?

Field of Dreams?

SO Cute!!

SO Cute!!

So Lets get back to Henry Cavill. The man IS Superman. Literally he embodies him. His performance was absolutely fantastic and I’m pretty sure he has taken over as my favorite super-hero now. I did have a bit of an “Incredibles” moment though when his cape worked against him a few times… “NO CAPES!” And lets discuss these muscles. And the Beard. And the Suit. And the Hair. And the teeth. Well. Maybe I should just let the rest of my review be in pictures and let it speak for itself. Fun Fact… He auditioned for ‘Edward’ in ‘Twilight’. Hmmm… Bottom line is- I thought it was great. I took my 8-year-old and 10-year-old daughters as well at 16-year-old nephew and they all loved it so I think it’s pretty safe to say that it can reach a broad audience! Go for a date with your man ladies! You won’t leave disappointed!

Well Hello There

Well Hello ThereHenry Cavill Shirtless

The Great Gatsby 3D Review- Get to the theater and see it!

greatgatsbyleo500-3d

When I first saw that Leonardo DiCaprio was filming the Great Gatsby last year I squeeled because well, I am a child of the 90’s so yeah, of course I love pretty much anything with Leo in it. Then I started seeing the pictures from the set… and finally the first trailer. It made my heart race. Last night when I got to screen the movie, That was also the same effect it had on me. Being an avid reader, you would think that I would have read the book, but for one reason or another I just have never gotten around to it, so this review is coming from someone who knew OF the story but not the whole story. I for one was absolutely thrilled with how it was portrayed. Now, how true to the book it was, I cannot I say. I am curious to hear what more people have to say about that after opening weekend.

First off, let me state that I am generally NOT a fan of movies in 3D. When I walked in and was handed glasses, I thought, “Great.” and was kind of annoyed. However I was glad to finally have been proven wrong, that 3D can actually be quite visually stunning! The very opening sequence had me in awe. I normally think 3D is too dark, that it’s distracting, and I get sick of wearing the glasses. However with this film, it was fantastic! The color was still vibrant, the effects were spot on, they added so much depth to the movie and I eventually forgot that I was wearing them and quite enjoyed Leonardo DiCaprio in 3D! The Snow. The Mist. The Green Light. You. Will. See. tumblr_mfecjrXFAD1qbnt5go1_1280

As a whole, I was very pleased with this film. I am going to go out on a limb and say that it is my favorite film that I’ve seen of 2013! The acting was spot on. The story was amazing. The theme of the American Dream, self-reinvention and love lost, regained and lost again is touching and tragic. The anticipation of meeting “Gatsby” played by Leonardo DiCaprio was quite well done and when you finally see him its almost breathtaking.  Nick Carraway (Played by Tobey McGuire) narrates the film while his voice is probably not my favorite, he did a decent job. Carey Mulligan who plays “Daisy Buchanan” was standout to me. Her poise and mannerism’s made me fall in love with this girl. Leo obviously knocked the ball out of the park with this one too. While the term “Old Sport” may have been used 12 times too many, I understand that was part of the character he played… and boy did he play it well.

thegreatgatsby3d-mv-29

I think I have learned that I really just love Baz Luhrmann films. The ambiance of the film felt very “Moulin Rouge” if you will. The eccentric camera angles and filming vantage points. The slightly exaggerated costumes for the time period. The color’s just a bit brighter than maybe they would have been in the 1920’s. The soundtrack. I absolutely LOVE when a time period piece pulls modern day music and works it into a soundtrack. Lana Del Ray, Beyonce, Jay Z. When they are heading into New York City and you catch a slight chorus of “H to the Izzo” by Jay Z the entire theater loved it. It somehow fit. An acoustic version of “Crazy in Love”. I immediately went home and downloaded the soundtrack! I found it brilliant! The modern “edge” to the parties thrown at Gatsby’s were unique and thrilling. The set’s were amazing. Gatsby’s “castle” it absolutely ridiculous.

thegreatgatsby3d-mv-2thegreatgatsby3d-mv-59I definitely would reccomend getting to the theater to see this movie! I laughed, My heart raced, I got teary, it truly gave me all the feels! I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did!

The Originals- A Vampire Diaries Spin-off, HUGE Twist! Is it a hit? Warning- Spoilers!

the-originals-poster

I think I speak for everyone in the TVD fandom when I say that we are all still processing and trying to recover from the big PLOT TWIST that was thrown our way last night in the back door pilot for the Vampire Diaries Spin Off, The Originals. If You haven’t watched it yet and don’t want to be spoiled… I suggest you don’t read on! I repeat… Spoilers Ahead!

So lets catch you up to speed, This will be the condensed version of what went down last night!  The Originals is (hopefully) going to be it’s own showed picked up in the fall. It will be set in New Orleans and filmed on location, which is just awesome. Don’t get me wrong, I love Mystic Falls, and the set in Georgia is great, but I really enjoyed the scenery in last nights episode! Long story short, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) travels to NOLA to track down a witch that “supposedly” is plotting against him (according to a letter that Miss Katherine left him in the end of the last episode). He arrives to find Marcel (played by Charles Michael Davis) a vampire that he created “ruling” New Orleans. Vampires respect him. He has witches in the palm of his hand…. Klaus isn’t too thrilled with this. I sense a little jealousy, I think that Marcel was able to establish in NOLA what Klaus was trying to do with his hybrids and failed. He is charismatic and people like him, which lets face it, Klaus isn’t much of a people person. the-originals-marcel-klaus-charles-michael-davis

Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) is also in New Orleans searching for clues to her werewolf lineage. She meets two witch sisters at a bar and they send her into a creepy forest/swamp in the middle of no where. Smart Move Hayley. They steal a lock of her hair and do some voo doo crap in the cemetery and simultaneously witches (I’m assuming?) come out of the woods and kidnap Hayley as she passes out. This is all we see of her for a while.

In the meantime, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) makes an awesome entrance… Can I just say right now that I LOVE Elijah? He always has his stuff together, in his suits and makes his moves like a beast. Of course he gets to the bottom of things quickly. Because he’s just oh so smart and know’s how to handle business.

Elijah approaches Klaus and they have an awesome brotherly exchange of hello’s, and Elijah wants Klaus to come with him. Klaus of course is resistant. He doesn’t want to go anywhere until he finds out who is conspiring against him. Elijah say’s he know… Klaus is intrigued.

Now for the fun stuff!!! Setting: Lafayette Cemetery. Let me introduce you to Sophie, (played byDaniella Pineda) one of the witches that sent Hayley out into the forest. She states that Marcel is out of control, and that they are going to take him down. And Klaus is going to help them. Naturally Klaus reacts awesome to this since he LOVES being told what to do right? Wrong. So what is their leverage? Hayley! Klaus laughs in their face and calls her a “liquor-fueled one-night stand.” Oh but there is more to this story… Sophie tells him that one of her powers is that she is able to tell when a girl is pregnant. DUH DUH DUH. And in case you didn’t get that Elijah clears up any confusion by stating “Niklaus, the girl is carrying your child”. Say What!?! Bomb sufficiently Dropped. klaus-originals-hayley-baby phoebe-tonkin-the-originals

Obviously Klaus is pretty pissed. He say’s she must of been with someone else. That Vampires can’t procreate…. Oh yes, but WEREWOLVES can buddy! Elijah tells him to stop and listen. He does and for a split second…. Klaus hears the babies heartbeat. With a TEAR in his eye he turns and tells them to hill Hayley and the baby, and storms out of the cemetery.

Elijah chases him, Klaus believe’s it’s a trick and Elijah talks about how it’s not and it’s a new start for them. That family IS Power etc and so forth.

After this point… maybe because I was reeling from shock, the episode went a little downhill for me. Elijah calls Rebekah, Fill’s her in on the situation. She basically say’s that the child will be better off without him. Klaus goes looking for Marcel… Lashes out at him and instead of attacking him, attacks one of his minions. This break’s one of Marcel’s “rules” and Klaus taunts him with the fact that he is immortal and can’t be killed.

Klaus then wanders the streets and watches a man painting a canvas where he interacts with the one human on the show. A bartender named Camille (played by Leah Pipes). They chat about what the man is thinking as he paints… She say’s he is angry and trying to control his demons and alone… Klaus legit has tears in his eyes. Camille laughs it off and turns to find him gone 4.20.1-300x258

Cut to Klaus and Elijah on a park bench. Klaus has determined that he forgot how much he loves this city and Elijah says that he never forgot. They both admit that they were once happy there and they hated leaving. Klaus says that Marcel has what he wants and that ” I want to be King”. Elijah asks about Hayley and the baby…  “Every King needs an heir…” OOH DILF DADDY KLAUS!!

The witches are trying to figure out how to take down Marcel. Klaus gives Marcel his blood to heal his minion and says that he’s not his enemy and he would like to stay awhile.

Now for all you fangirling devastated Klaroline shippers out there, Klaus makes a phone call to Caroline at the end of the episode standing on a street corner in the Quarter “Caroline, I’m standing in one of my favorite places in the world. Surrounded by food, music, art, culture. And all I can think about is how much I want to show it to you, Maybe one day you’ll let me” Awwwwwww.

klaus

The episode ends with Elijah trying to convince Rebekah to come “home”. Elijah saying goodbye to Katherine. The Salvatore brother’s beginning their torture on Elena to try and get her humanity back by Damon tricking her into drinking blood with Vervaine in it.  The episode ends with Elena saying “You wanna play games?  Let’s see who breaks first, me . . . or you” to Stefan blocking her from exiting the dungeon.

SO! What did you guys think? It was quite a bit to digest. At first I was kind of irritated that they were taking a whole night away from my beloved Vampire Diaries to go galavant around New Orleans without Damon and Stefan, But it was nice getting to see a glimpse of them and in all honesty, Klaus knocked it out of the park. I could DEF get used to watching him and Elijah for a full hour separately on a weekly basis.  I want to just state here and now that Joseph Morgan was absolutely phenomenal in this episode. ALL the feels guys. I think he portrayed every emotion. Love, Hate, Jealously, Anger, Fear… it was all present. JoMo went from only going to be a guest role to getting his own show. That says something about an actor right there! The TEARS in his eyes, that got me!

Now I know that the fandom is in an uproar about the pregnancy and “what about Caroline”!?! Here’s my two cents. (my views in no way reflect the view of the entire Just J Mac team lol) While Klaus and Caroline hooking up, yes would have been Hot, there is no doubt in my mind of that… I think Klaus is a Villian. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE him, but hasn’t Caroline been hurt enough?? I know that people are saying that she is the one that could “change” him, but I’m sorry, he’s had TWO SEASON’s to do that and it hasn’t happened yet. I don’t want to see my precious Blonde Barbie Vamp get her heart broken again. I really think her bestie Stefan needs to open his eye’s and see what’s right in front of him. Shrugs. Just saying… Steroline could be really awesome I think. I DO however think we will see something happen with Klaus and Caroline. Joseph Morgan and Julie Plec have both said that there will be cross over episodes… SO you never know!

I really hope The Original’s get’s picked up. I think there are a lot of different directions they could go with it and I think it would be wonderful to restore the Salvatore brothers as the “Top Dog’s” back in Mystic Falls. I would like to see where they can go with both story line’s and really who is going to complain about basically TWO hours of Vampire Diaries? Certainly not this girl! Sound off in the comments and let us know what you thought!

Oh and I saw this on twitter last night and thought it was pretty funny…. Had to share!!

The Host Review- Go See it!

So a few weeks ago, the other site I am affiliated with SandwichJohnFilms gave me an amazing opportunity to screen The Host and also interview Max Iron’s and Jake Abel. Here is the review that I wrote for them and WARNING…. it DOES contain spoilers…. SO read on at your own risk!!!

The Host opens Friday March 29th, 2013  Image

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I had the opportunity to screenTHE HOST a couple weeks ago in San Francisco. Being that I was a huge ‘Twilight’ fan, when I heard that Stephenie Meyer wrote another book that was an “adult” book a few years ago, I immediately had to check it out. I’m going to confess here that I didn’t finish it. I wasn’t a fan. I just couldn’t get into it. I’m not a HUGE sci-fi fan to begin with unless you count Star Wars which I don’t since I was raised with two older brothers. I mean who doesn’t like Star Wars. So that being said… I eventually returned the copy I borrowed from a friend unfinished and moved on with my life.

Fast Forward to Comic Con last July, I got to see the exclusive 8 minute trailer introduced by miss Stephenie Meyer herself during the ‘Breaking Dawn Pt 2‘ panel… Meh… Not Impressed.(CueGrumpy Cat)Image

Again, moved on with my life although I was quite intrigued with the cast they acquired. Then a month ago John came to me with the opportunity to screen the movie and interview Max Irons and Jake Abel who play the two main male lead roles in the film. Done. In. Who wouldn’t be right? I immediately downloaded the book on my nook again and tried to read it. Real Life got in the way and I wasn’t able to finish before I saw the movie but honestly I am kind of glad that I didn’t.
Image
I am such a huge reader and so many times I am disappointed with the book to movie adaption.(aka Beautiful Creatures) So for once it was actually really nice to go into this movie not having read the book first. I knew the general story line so I wasn’t too terribly confused with the plot. I brought a friend with me who also hadn’t read the book.

Image

Warning before you read on…. There might be Spoilers!!
THE HOST is technically “sci fi” and “alien invasion” but it’s not your typical Alien story. It takes place after the invasion, which was a sort of peaceful invasion. The aliens which are referred to as souls inhibit human bodies and take possession of their mind, body, spirit. All for the common goal of reclaiming the world for the betterment of humanity. The “aliens” fit in the palm of your hand and are really a bright light with tentacles almost. Not exactly the gross alien I was picturing. Only a few humans have escaped possession, by hiding out in remote areas. Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) is one of the humans that is on the run with her brother, Jamie (Chandler Canterbury) and boyfriend Jared (Max Irons). Melanie is cornered in an abandoned hotel and tries to sacrifice her life to protect the ones she loves, however she does not die and is implanted by a millennium old soul (alien) named Wanderer.

Seeker (Diane Kruger) then tries to have Wanderer access Melanie’s memories to rat out the location of other humans in hiding, in search of the “resistance”, however Melanie’s voice starts a sort of “tug of war” with Wanderer for control over Melanie’s body. Melanie convinces Wanderer to escape, and drives out to the desert in search of Melanie’s family. She trenches through the desert and nearly dies of dehydration when Melanie’s Uncle Jeb (William Hurt) finds her. It is very quickly realized that humans do not realize that a human can remain alive once a soul has been inserted into a body. This is one of my favorite parts of the movie which totally catches me off guard. Wanderer/Melanie is reunited with Jared and it’s fantastic I don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t read the book like me because the shock factor was great!Image

I have to say that the story that follows is quite moving! I was pleasantly surprised! While there were things that I found very predictable and totally “Stephenie Meyer” cheesy, I was greatly surprised with how adult the story was compared to ‘Twilight‘. There are amazing themes of love, friendship, family, loyalty, and humanity that really cause you to think. The love story is actually quite interesting and fascinating. It isn’t a triangle, but more of a box, as I heard one of the actors Jake Abel say in an interview, because SPOILER ALERT, Continue reading
