‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes’ is Back in Production

Despite it’s tepid performance at the box office, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones producers have decided to move forward with the sequel, City of Ashes. The second film had originally been put on hold, and fans were unsure if we’d ever see it in the theater.  Executive producer Martin Moskowicz had this to say on bringing the sequel to the big screen:

“The fan response, from the blogosphere and the thousands of mails we have received, has encouraged us to keep going,” Moszkowicz told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s been overwhelmingly positive, in contrast to some other YA titles.”

“We are analyzing what we did wrong with the first film — particularly with the positioning and marketing — and what changes we have to make. We are working with a great group of people to reposition the franchise [for City of Ashes].”

Moszkowicz suggested one reason for City of Bones’ misfire may have been a marketing campaign that was too narrowly focused on teenage fans, to the detriment of Clare’s 20- and 30-something readers.

“The readers of Mortal Instruments are older than you might think,” he said. “That may have been one issue in our marketing, that we focused too much on a very young audience segment.”

J.K. Rowling Teaming with Warner Brothers to Bring Another Harry Potter-Universe Book to the Big Screen

Harry Potter fans are ecstatic today as it was revealed the J.K. Rowling and Warner Brothers have cut a deal to bring Rowling’s book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them to the silver screen. While Fantastic Beasts is not actually a Harry Potter book, it does take place in the same universe and discusses the supernatural beasts in that world.

“‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” Rowling said in a statement.  “The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry’s gets underway.”

One big change this time around is that Rowling is actually going to be writing the screenplay for the film. This is a first for her but her reasoning was this:

Rowling, who has never written a screenplay before, said she wanted to because “the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ realized by another writer was difficult.”

Look for other merchandise based on the book, as well.

Confession: I haven’t read it. Does that make me a terrible Harry Potter fan?

A Eulogy – The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Movie Poster

It never even saw the light of production, heard ‘cut’ yelled across set, or heard a scream in a sound stage. The follow up movie to The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, has been shut down before it even started production. Due to low numbers from the first film, Sony has decided to ‘delay’ production of City of Ashes…indefinitely.

We here at justjmac are indefinitely saddened by this delay. Besides one or two slightly corny bits it was a quite pleasant movie to watch. Now, I don’t know if one could follow it if they hadn’t read the books but still… they should just go ahead and make it for our sake.

le sad.
